OMFG!! Seriously!? OMFG...

Mon Apr 28, 2008 at 12:40:38 PM PDT

Warning: Rant ahead, but if you read to the end you'll see that I need your help...I need you to make a pledge.

Just this morning while I got ready for classes I watched CNN - I saw them cover Wright's comments at the National Press Club. The assessment of all the pundits - "the sky is falling" for Obama with regard to Wright. I got home from class and turned to MSNBC where Jonathan Capehart was saying that Obama can in fact be held accountable for the various things that other people say. Are you serious, Capehart? Come back to reality here. I know you work at the WaPo - and it's difficult to pull your head out of the ass of Republicans as a result, but on what planet can Obama be held accountable for something he never said - when the person who DID say it is someone who Obama has already clearly stated he disagrees with?

Oh - but it doesn't stop there...

CNN spent a good twenty minutes talking about how the television series, Gossip Girl is just too shocking for words! They actually have billboards and posters that say, "OMFG"...and according to one interviewed viewer on the street, "that's blasphemous"...but the VP of the network, CW, says that people can interpret it different ways, like, "Oh My Fricken Goodness"...so it's ok.

And then we talked - on both CNN and MSNBC - about those shocking, and I do mean utterly shocking and offensive photos of 15 year old Miley Cyrus from a Vanity Fair photo shoot. Let me take this opportunity to recommend a good book - The Lolita Effect, by M. Gigi Durham - which I just started reading, and which speaks directly to the treatment that Miley Cyrus (among others) is receiving, as well as to the images that are being released.

Now we're back on MSNBC - to Wright again. Did you know, Republicans are going to use Wright against Obama in November?! OMFG!! It's true! I never would have expected this. Never.

OMFG.

You know what - I'm genuinely upset today about two things. One of them is that the Supreme Court just stood behind a law that pretty much institutes a poll tax on voters that are more likely to be Democratic. If we do not win in November, I have to admit that I won't have a whole lot of hope for the future of our country. Four more years of McBush is...well, simply unimaginable.

The other thing I'm upset about is the state of the traditional media today. When people I once respected sit on the news and talk about shit that just doesn't matter - like, OMFG and photos and Rev. Wright...well, I mourn for the day when journalists actually acted like journalists - actually, I'm not sure I've ever been alive and conscious enough to see that in my lifetime - maybe I'm mourning one of those things that never existed.

Either way - I can't do anything at all about the Supreme Court at the moment. I can't get them to reverse their decision. I can't build a time machine and go back to make sure this law didn't get passed. The only thing I can do is volunteer for an organization that will ensure that those who would be affected by this completely unconstitutional pos "law" - get the help they need to get out and vote.

And I certainly can't seem to force the media to change. I've tried not watching. I've tried selectively watching. I've tried writing letters to pundits and journalists. I've tried writing letters to advertisers. I've tried ridiculing the media. None of this seems to do much good.

So here's where I am today. I am offended. I'm not offended by OMFG, or by pictures of Miley Cyrus. I'm not offended by Rev. Wright. I am offended that people on the street don't know how many soldiers have died in Iraq - because no one is covering THAT information. I'm offended that John McCain gets to be BFF with Hagee - a complete and utter right wing LOON - but Obama can't talk to Wright because he's just too out of the mainstream. I'm offended that we're debating whether or not super delegates will be "offended" that Wright "made fun of" a former Democratic President in his speech last night Did these pundit morons watch the same speech I did?! I don't think so. I think they just make shit up. I'm offended that homes are being foreclosed upon. I'm offended that the job market sucks. I'm offended that gas is almost $4.00 - and that the common response to that is concurrently - "OMFG" and "get used to it".

I'm offended. I'm angry. I'm annoyed.

BUT - I've got the afternoon and evening here - and I have some papers to grade, and I have to find an apartment, and I have to do some laundry...and I have to try not to destroy my television I know, I know...just turn it off. And instead of stewing in my rage at the idiocy I'm going to do the only thing I can. I'm going to make some calls to IN and NC for Obama. I'm pledging right now to make 1000 calls to NC and IN between now and May 6th. I need you to make a pledge too.

Let's give our best to IN and NC...let's win May 6th in delegates by a large number - and let's end this primary and start some McCain bashing.

A hat tip to Kath25 for the html on the table. Without Kath I would be html lost. And a hat tip to polecat for the poll - which I have added...and altered just slightly :-)
